There’s a few books that have caught my eye recently, and I wanted to trial a second-hand online bookseller that I was recommended, so I’ve recently received several new books!
The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling) – I’ve read the first and third of Galbraigh’s detective series starring Cormoran Strike (both of which, coincidentally, I also bought secondhand. Hey, I’m going to be a uni student this year, I need to keep an eye on finances!). I loved the other stories, and despite their size they are brilliantly readable page-turners, and I’m expecting The Silkworm to continue that trend.
Flowers For Algernon by Daniel Keyes – I read this really quickly, but have had to hold off reading any reviews until I’ve written mine – which is hard! I was really looking forward to reading it, and it did not let me down…
The Giver by Lois Lowry – similarly, aimed at children so it was a very quick read, but as with Flowers for Algernon, I’m holding off reading about it… I’ll limit myself here to saying that it was highly thought provoking!
The Genie Hunt by Mike Tuggle – Mike kindly provided me an e-copy for review of his upcoming book. I’m not quite sure when I’ll review it, I can read physical books on my commute but don’t want to risk my Kindle! Winter Tales by Jan Edwards – similarly, Jan kindly sent me an e-copy for review, but unfortunately I have the same issues reviewing as with Genie Hunt. However, hopefully over the summer I’ll be able to read them both!
Posting updates
As some of you know, I am taking my A-levels this summer. For those of you not in the UK, these are the final exams before uni, so I need to do well! My exams run through June, I might keep doing the Flash Fiction Foray but I’ll see how it goes; but don’t be surprised if I vanish abruptly for a few weeks…

Hey! I’ve actually READ two of those books! Imagine that! “Flowers for Algernon” and “The Giver.” Loved them both. Have you read “The Handmaid’s Tale” yet?

Ooh they’re the two I’ve read (although I haven’t got around to writing my reviews yet!). Yeah I really enjoyed it, although I remember I was a little put out that it took me so long to realise that the title was a reference to Chaucer! I think ‘Brave New World’ is probably my favourite dystopian style book, and it seems more realistic than some other ones too.

But don’t you wonder if that kind of medical technology will ever exist? Reminds me a lot of he movie “Awakenings” with Robin Williams (bless is soul…sigh). Hey, do good on your tests, bud!

Yes that’s true, parts of it are more sci-fi than others. On the other hand, the consumerist society, with people being controlled through their desires and always taking the easy option in particular can appear relatable today. I’ve not seen the film, I’ll have to check it out at some point… Thank you!
