I hadn’t heard of Walker Percy before this, but his statement here is very interesting indeed.
In this world goodness is destined to be defeated. But a man must go down fighting. That is the victory. To do anything less is to be less than a man.
That’s an extraordinarily defeatist viewpoint, that goodness is destined to be defeated. Personally it is one that I would disagree in the strongest terms with, I would point to the victories of goodness and unity in the world, of triumphs of goodness in relationships and more broadly cross-continents.
But it is a viewpoint that could be defended, and the point in particular that a man must fight for goodness right until he can fight no longer is one that I strongly endorse. If there is one thing that we should push for, struggle and fight for, it is goodness.
