Quote of the day

Today’s quote is…

“Is it better for a man to have chosen evil than to have good imposed upon him?” (Anthony Burgess)–A Clockwork Orange

On the Clockwork Orange theme, today we have a deep philosophical question. Personally, I would say that, as a proponent of free will, there can only be one answer. And yet, is the state’s job not to impose good, to force men to have as little choice in the matter as they can? The state want good men, however they get them, they make the punishments for choosing evil as draconian as possible. At the moment there is still a choice. Will there be in the future?

  1. That hangs right up there with “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.” (Spock, The Wrath of Khan”) Head scratchers that very much depend on the perspective of the person who is interpreting.
